Necessary Vaccinations for Cats and Kittens

Vaccinations introduce a less potent form of a pathogen into your pet's body to stimulate its immune system and make it develop antibodies to specific diseases. If the pathogen vaccinated against shows up in the future, your cat's system knows how to fight it off.

The most important vaccinations for your cat are:

  • Rabies: This is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain and can be transferred to human beings from their pets if the saliva of an infected animal comes into contact with a person through broken skin or mucous membranes. For most states, this vaccine is compulsory.
  • FVRCP Combination Vaccine: As the name suggests, this vaccine helps protect your cat from a range of diseases including feline distemper, calicivirus, and rhinotracheitis.
  • Bordetella: This vaccination is a requirement for cats exposed to various outdoor environments like pet daycares or other unvaccinated animals.
  • Feline Leukemia (or FelV): Transmission of feline leukemia occurs through exchange of saliva, blood, and other bodily fluids with an infected animal. Cats exposed to other unvaccinated cats, either from roaming outdoors or living in a boarding facility, need the FeIV vaccine to help keep them safe.

Our veterinarian can help you find a schedule to make sure your cat has all necessary vaccines in good time.
